UX & User Interface Design

Excellent UX and user interface design ensures that medical, IVD, and health products can be used safely and efficiently. This includes, for example, ensuring that the workflows within the product align with the external workflows involving the product. The ability to easily find all necessary information at the right time, as well as a modern look and feel, are also hallmarks of outstanding UX and user interface design.

We support you from the initial user interface concept through the development of color and form guidelines and the initial wireframe design all the way to the final visual design. Throughout this process, we always keep the user’s needs, regulatory and product-specific requirements, and the subsequent implementation in mind.

How we help

Depending on the project phase, we can assist you with individual design services or serve as your end-to-end partner for all your UX and UI design needs, whether digital or physical.

  • Development of unique visual styles tailored to your brand, including style guides and design systems
  • Development of user interface concepts
  • Finalization of the visual design, including all assets required for technical development
  • Creating interactive prototypes (e.g., wireframes, visually detailed click-through mockups, or 3D prints) for trade shows, stakeholders, or user research
  • Documenting design decisions, e.g., to meet regulatory requirements
  • Handoff to technical development, for example, as a pre-coded component library for digital UIs.

How do we approach UX and user interface design?

Sascha discusses the planning of UX and user interface design for medical devices, IVDs, and health products
01. Understanding the Product – Understanding Usage and Requirements

We analyze your product idea, requirements, target audiences, usage contexts, key use cases, and existing design assets. In doing so, we take into account both user needs and the specific requirements of medical, IVD, and health products.

02. UI Design – We translate complexity into clear workflows

We develop information architecture, workflows, and initial wireframes/3D models for your interface. This allows us to translate complex functions, medical information, and critical steps into clear and reliable user flows.

03. Visual Design – The visual design of the user interface

Building on existing design assets, we further develop your design style. Using this as a foundation, we design the visual identity of your product to create a visually striking, consistent, and user-friendly interface.

04. Prototyping & Testing – Incorporate user feedback early on

We create digital and physical prototypes, ranging from interactive click-through mockups to final-looking products. This allows designs to be evaluated early on, showcased at trade shows, or used in user studies. The feedback is then incorporated into the rest of the design process.

05. Design Documentation & Handover

We document design decisions and make them traceable. For technical development, we provide design assets (e.g., icons, animations, color values) as well as fully developed components (design or software). Upon request, we can develop your (digital) application directly.

Certified for excellence &
awarded for design

We are certified to ISO 13485 and ISO 27001. This allows us to combine proven quality processes with secure handling of sensitive data—specifically for projects in the medical device and IVD sectors.

Our commitment to quality is also reflected in the design awards we have won. Among other accolades, we have been named a “Red Dot Winner for User Interface Design” on multiple occasions and have received the German Design Award.

Why Custom Medical?

Specialized Expertise: Our team has years of experience designing digital and physical medical devices, IVDs, and health products. As a result, we understand the requirements of regulated product development and design interfaces that work in everyday medical practice.

The Right Product: We don’t just design outstanding user interfaces. We also help you refine the right product idea – based on real user data, clear use cases, and relevant user needs.

User-centered design from the start: Our designs are based on user research and real user feedback. This allows us to develop interfaces that are intuitive, efficient, and tailored to the actual usage context.

Regulatory compliance built in: We pragmatically factor regulatory approval into every step. If needed, we also provide support with formative evaluations, the final summative evaluation / human factors validation, and technical documentation.

Award-winning design: Our team has won numerous design awards for outstanding user interfaces and UX, including Red Dot Awards and German Design Awards. We bring this design quality to your medical, IVD, or health product.

Flexible and international: With offices in Darmstadt and Boston, we support projects for international markets. At the same time, we adapt our collaboration flexibly to your project phase, budget, and goals.

Our Design Tools & Prototyping Capabilities

We use modern design, prototyping, and 3D tools such as Figma, Adobe Creative Cloud, and SolidWorks to quickly bring ideas to life, making them easy to discuss and test. Initial concepts are thus transformed not only into digital wireframes, clickdummies, and interactive prototypes, but also, if needed, into physical models produced by a 3D printer. This allows us to holistically evaluate user logic, screen positioning, haptics, and the real-world usage context from the very beginning – both with stakeholders and with actual users.

For later implementation, we document design decisions, components, icons, and interaction patterns in a structured manner within style guides or component libraries. This provides your development team with a clear foundation – and ensures your user interface remains consistent even with future enhancements.

From Great Design to Great Code to Great Medical Devices: How to align IEC 62366-1 and IEC 62304 (On-Demand)

What is it about?

In many medtech projects, design, usability engineering, and software development start simultaneously but then gradually diverge. Programmed user interfaces may behave differently than planned, users may be unable to cope with workflows, and it may become nearly impossible to trace which decisions were relevant to safety later on. The consequences are rework, inefficient coordination, and uncertainty, which are often only visible during user tests or audits.

So, how can these unwanted silos be broken down? How can I ensure that excellent designs turn into outstanding code and, ultimately, great medical devices? This webinar will address these questions.

Dr. Benjamin Franz, Custom Medical’s Chief Growth & Innovation Officer, will demonstrate the issues that arise when IEC 62366-1 and IEC 62304 are processed in unintended silos and explain how to conceive them as a joint process.

In this webinar, you’ll learn:

  • What great design, great code, and a great medical device actually are.
  • Where typical breakpoints between design, usability, and software development arise and why even experienced teams are affected by them.
  • How IEC 62366-1 and IEC 62304 can work together to help you avoid friction losses, extra work, and late surprises.

Trace Me If You Can: How to Keep Track of Medical Device UI Design Decisions (On-Demand)

What is it about?

Why was the button moved to the right? Why does the workflow look the way it does, and who decided on it? Questions like these arise in almost every development project. Without an rationale, endless discussions waste valuable time, and issues will arise during the audit.

In this webinar, Dr. Benjamin Franz, Custom Medical’s Chief Growth & Innovation Officer, will show you how to pragmatically and efficiently implement traceability in UI design. You will learn about the regulatory requirements of ISO 13485 and FDA QMSR; typical mistakes that occur in projects; and strategies that have been proven effective for documenting design decisions in a traceable, audit-proof manner.

In this webinar, you’ll learn:

  • Which traceability regulatory requirements are absolutely essential
  • 8 typical “traceability traps” from real projects – and how to avoid them
  • 4 proven strategies for transparent decision-making and preventing unnecessary loops
